DIY Inground pool - day 6.5

After real work today, Megan and I spent a few hours honing out the hopper of the pool.  I didn't realize we were so far off from the dig specs so there was A LOT of trimming to do.  Exactly what we are doing is carving out the "deep end" to within the inch of the dig specs.  Each of those tiny walls are 14" deep and only extend 12" to the bottom, so more than a 45 degree angle.  We ran a plumb line on the top edge of the pool and measured exactly 56.5 inches all the way around.  We also cleaned up a few rough spots in the bottom in preparation for Pool Krete which is one of the next steps, weather pending.  Here are a few shots...

Here is a time-lapse of the work, this was a pretty tough part of the job so far, thankful to have Megan right with me the whole way, she is one tough cookie!

After we finished the hopper grading, we needed to install the retaining walls for the tanning ledge and steps.  This was a debacle and still an issue we need to solve for.  Its like that new Kevin Bacon scary movie where the inside of the house measures 30' but the exterior dimensions are 20', these two perfect 6' sections don't fit into a space that is 12' 2"...I don't get it, something creepy going on.  I think the solution is to find some small turnbuckles to pull the wall, which will actually help also when we backfill with gravel.  I'll attack that tomorrow when I can find some time!

Stay tuned!!
